Ha Long bay of Quang Ninh province is twice stated to be
Natural Heritage by UNESCO, there are nearly 500 more relics
of culture and history, 28 of them were classified: Yen T
u complex, Cua Ong, Tra Co", Quan Lan temples... and
the Bach Dang relics.
It's a relic complex in Yen Hung district related to the outstanding
victory led by Generalissimo Tran Hang Dao in a war against
Mongolian aggression on Bach Dang river in 1288. The complex
comprises of Bach Dang pillarground, an ironwood tree and
a well named Ring (forest), the temples to Tran Hung Dao and
a superior lady, temple Trung Ban.
The Bach Dang historical pillar-ground lies in a marsh of
Yen Giang commune, Yen Hung district, bordering the dyke of
Gianh river. The pillars (After 7 centuries under water) were
discovered in 1953 by local people when they were strengthening
their dykes. Hundreds of ironwood pillars stood deep in the
mud, each one, 2 - 3 metres long, was put at lm interval.
These pillars were just a small part of the pillarground set
up by Tran Hung Dao in the riverbed to ambush the invaders'
boats in the historical battle field of Bach Dang to fight
the Mongolians. Every year, on 8th of lunar March, the local
citizens organize festival to celebrate the event. Activities
in the festival are many: offering incenses, sedan carrying,
boat-race, wrestling, human chess, cock-fight and games to
relive the battle field.
Two ironwood trees close to the well Ring are almost 770 years
old, the last to be seen of the ancient forest whereof the
wooden pillars were taken from. The two aged-long trees still
live as the monuments of victory in Yen Hung.
The temple to Tran Hung Dao and the temple "Lady"
are 3 kilometres from Yen Hung town. Tran Hung Dao temple
has one front section, two side-sections acid an innermost
one. There are wooden scrolls describing the merits by Tran
Hung Dao, a sedan and 4 royal nominations of Nguyen kings.
The temple to the "Saint-lady" worship a tea-shop
keeper who explained carefully the low tides, high tides of
the sea, so that Tran Hung Dao could prepare his pillars for
the battle. After a final victory, the Genelissimo returned
to find her, but he couldn't. A temple was built by his orders
to worship her.
It's said that before the battle, Tran Hung Dao stood on a
hill lock to watch the whole area, his hair flew down, he
put his sword on the place to tighten his hair. Later, the
locals set up a temple on the spot where he stood to worship
him. When village Trung Ban was founded, villagers built a
pagoda to replace the small temple to commemorate the national
hero. The statue of the hero was made of solid wood, red-lacquered
and gilded, in form of a man on his chair, a royal cap on
and decorated with dragons and phoenixes.
Bach Dang relic is a complex of historical and cultural values,
it's long become a good spot for tourists far and wide in
Quang Ninh.
