He is among nine farmers who were invited by the Ministry
of Technology and Science to the Technology and Equipment
Fair (Vietnam Techmart 2003). These individuals have
been praised for their innovations.
Mr Tam was born into a poor family in My Hiep commune,
Phu My district, Binh Dinh province. He had to work
for farm owners in Gia Lai, Dak Lak provinces from the
age of 15, gaining some experience in using modern equipment.
During operation, he also found the machinery's weak
points which could be improved for better performance.
He suggested his ideas to the owners who refused because
they thought that such a young boy, who had only completed
the fifth grade, could not make it better.
He decided to go to the new economic zone in Cat Tien
in Lam Dong province. There he worked hard on the two
hectares of land which had been given to him. However,
he could not cut grass on the land with his hands because
it grew quickly. He saved money to buy a grass-cutting
machine at a price of VND 1.8 million. The machine could
gather 20-30% of the grass at one side. An idea came
up to him to transform the machine into a harvester.
He studied the machine thoroughly and made improvements.
As a result, the rate of the rice plant cutter was raised
up to 80%, bringing about high economic efficiency in
production.
In March 2002, State President Tran Duc Luong sent a
letter to Mr Tam, praising him for his innovation.
A private business in Ho Chi Minh City has co-ordinated
with him to manufacture the machine for sale. The product
is now being with higher efficiency. Recently, the product
has been granted with copyright by the Department of
Intellectual Property.
