The Mekong Delta province of Can Tho has exported 330 tonnes
of seafood to its new markets, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines,
grossing a combined US $921,000
Can Tho exported seafood to nine Asian countries besides its
European and North American markets. Its Asian markets include
Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.
It has so far this year shipped 31,000 tonnes of seafood abroad,
including 11,000 tonnes of shrimp, for US $162.4 million a
25 % year-on-year increase.
Shrimp exports were valued at US $116 million or 72 % of the
total export turnover. The province's major exporters, Cafatex,
Viet Hai, Cataco and Nam Hai, earned US $130 million in the
reviewed period.
Can Tho has also exported 7,750 tonnes of rice to its new
markets, Belgium, Senegal and South Africa for US $1.259 million.
This shipment brought the province's rice exports to 47,000
tonnes in October and to nearly 370,00 tonnes over the last
ten months, a 50% increase over last year.
Rice and seafood account for 80 % of the local export value.
