Can Tho province eyes new Asian markets for seafood

The Mekong Delta province of Can Tho has exported 330 tonnes of seafood to its new markets, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines, grossing a combined US $921,000

Can Tho exported seafood to nine Asian countries besides its European and North American markets. Its Asian markets include Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan and Singapore.

It has so far this year shipped 31,000 tonnes of seafood abroad, including 11,000 tonnes of shrimp, for US $162.4 million a 25 % year-on-year increase.

Shrimp exports were valued at US $116 million or 72 % of the total export turnover. The province's major exporters, Cafatex, Viet Hai, Cataco and Nam Hai, earned US $130 million in the reviewed period.

Can Tho has also exported 7,750 tonnes of rice to its new markets, Belgium, Senegal and South Africa for US $1.259 million.

This shipment brought the province's rice exports to 47,000 tonnes in October and to nearly 370,00 tonnes over the last ten months, a 50% increase over last year.

Rice and seafood account for 80 % of the local export value.
